Why is there illness and misery?

Why is there illness and misery?

“Why is there so much misery in the world?” is an obvious question when you think about the meaning of life. And if there is a God, why doesn’t He do anything about it?

Quite frankly, I can’t answer the question for you. Nevertheless, I want to give you a few of my thoughts to help you think about it;

Is there a God?

Through this website, you can learn from nature and life that there must be a Creator of all. Nature is overwhelmingly complex, and this was not caused by chance or chemical processes. Just look at the human DNA, the basic matter from which every living creature is made. This DNA is built up by an incredible amount of information. If you wrote this down, you would need more than 3000 books! Neither is it possible that spontaneous processes caused such a phenomenon. That would be just like creating a beautiful piece of music by randomly writing down a bunch of loose musical notes.

If life on earth did not evolve by chance, then there must be a design. And the design needs a designer. We call that designer, “God.”

Now God is not visible to us humans. After all, God is not matter; He has made matter, right?

I think that God has a good reason why He doesn’t materially show himself. He has created the possibility for choice in His design. Humans are probably the most complex product of His creation. We can make choices ourselves, and thereby also we can accept or deny our Creator.

However, this freedom of choice has a major downside: Egoism. We all think we know pretty well what is good for us. Do we just forget to remind ourselves why we have been created?

God wants respect, sincere attention, but also that his love for his creatures is answered. I think there are several reasons why He created people. Not because He was short of anything, but because it gives Him satisfaction. You don’t get true love when you create “robots.” Man is not a pre-programmed being and can decide for himself whether he respects or ignores God; He wants people to choose for Him sincerely.

A relationship means that it must be mutual. A relation is not based upon laws and regulations. That is not a basis for a relationship. Because we tend to think about ourselves, there is a good chance that we will just do what we like to do. We think we don’t need God… Many people deny His existence. By yielding to our egoism, some people even slip off in behavior that has nothing to do with love and humanity. With the most horrible consequences that we all know, such as wars, abuse, and much more.

Good and evil

Suppose there is no God. Even then, the question remains, “why there is misery in the world.” You could imagine that there is misery. But what is the basis for “good” and “evil” if you assume that everything is because it is … The existence of “right and wrong” means that there is a general morality, a general truth, a standard.

Why is someone worth protecting from “evil”? Is it the result of some chemical and physical processes? After all, natural laws are not caring about good or evil; they are just there. If everything goes according to fixed processes of cause and effect, then no choice is possible. And we do not have to worry about all the misery in the world.

We are talking about “good” and “evil.” The definition of what is “good” and what is “evil” differs in different parts of the world. Still, there is a worldwide standard, a moral. Killing someone is not right, nor is stealing. Almost everyone despises the raping of children; this indicates the existence of absolute truth. Morality does not exist without such a truth. Where does this absolute truth come from?

If there is no God, there is no universal “right” and “wrong.” That would mean that we have no basis for calling rape, murder, adultery, or lying “wrong.”

If there is a God, why doesn’t he intervene?

This question assumes that we can take over His position. However, we do not have the vision and the capacity to understand His plan. With that in mind, perhaps the question of why God allows evil and suffering remains unanswered.

Sometimes I struggle with the question of why people do horrible things to each other. Why didn’t God intervene when Hitler, Mao Zedong, or Stalin came to power? The same applies to natural disasters, diseases, and other misery. Maybe it’s because life here on earth isn’t what’s most important. Even though we experience life as it is, if there is more than we can see with our eyes, then the answer to this question can be very different.

I’m sure that there is more between “heaven and earth” than we can observe. Sometimes we can experience the presence thereof. People who are involved with the spiritual world can testify to that.

I know there is a battle going on in the spiritual dimension between God and his creatures (the angels, some of whom have rebelled against God). God allows all of this to a certain point in time. We don’t know yet when that moment will be. Meanwhile, we are opportune to make important choices in life.

We will die one day

That we all die, one day is a fact. The Bible explains this: Because people have been given the freedom of choice between good and evil, the result is that they die. It is just like with the laws of nature; you cannot bypass them. Given the misery that causes evil, it is probably better that you die over time.

But still, there is hope! …

What is the use of life?

What is the use of life? At least during our lifetime, we get the chance to accept God as our Creator. However, that does not ensure a relationship with Him. Our intentions can remain self-centered.

If God were not righteous but turned a blind eye to all wrong behavior, the world would turn into chaos. Every mistake, therefore, has a consequence (punishment); death is the ultimate consequence for human selfishness.

God knows that we intend to make mistakes. He has, therefore, came up with a loving solution. God came to earth to take responsibility for all the errors that make it impossible to have a good relation. Therefore he died for us to take away all the consequences of our bad behavior. Once that was done, no one can blame Him for unfair treatment. In this way, He paves the way for a relationship with the people who accept His outstretched hand.

Even if you cannot understand this offer fully, this is where faith is needed. Faith is not blind; it is not brainless. Faith recognizes our limitations and places trust in a higher power – namely God.

By the way: Everyone has a belief, whether you trust God or your reasoning, the public opinion, experts, or whatever.

Learn from misery

Despite the negative side of misery, it is also a way to learn as a person. After all, if everything in life went without problems, there would be no challenges, nor satisfaction. Misery and challenges also force us to make choices. By making choices, our true potential will emerge.

Misery and challenges ensure that you can grow in trust and faith. Often a particular situation seems terrible, but after a while, it appears that this is the best thing that has happened to you, and because of this situation, you have grown as a person. By accepting that we do not always have an answer to the question “why?”, You develop faith and trust. Faith requires that you want to base your trust on a higher power (God).

These approaches will not pass the feelings of pain and loss that result from tragedies. Many situations call to respond with compassion and a desire to help. As soon as we accept that life’s difficulties are a mechanism for growth, our opposition to this will weaken. Then we can experience life with a look at new possibilities.

Death is not The End

Throughout the Bible, God promises us that this life is only a run-up to eternal life with Him. That is if you choose to accept His offer. All the misery and even death are not so terrible if you know that there is a beautiful future waiting for you.

What if you can’t stand it anymore?

“Pain is inevitable; Suffering is optional.”

Sometimes the misery seems greater than the will to live on. I recently watched a documentary on TV about Chen Si, a Chinese man who stands guard on a bridge over the Yangtze River when he does not have to work. This Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is known worldwide as one of the most “popular” places for people to commit suicide. Every single day some people who do not wish to live anymore attempt to put an end to their misery by jumping into the water.

If Chen Si can be there on time, he will pull them away from the bridge rail and take them to a quiet place. He gives these desperate people a good meal and talks to this desperate person about the problems they have. Usually, something terrible has happened in their lives, and they did not see a solution to the issues that have arisen. A listening ear and sometimes a “kick in the ass” gives the depressed a renewed look at his or her life.

” For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life. “(Bible, John 3:16)

” For it is by God’s grace that you have been saved through faith. It is not the result of your own efforts, but God’s gift, so that no one can boast about it.  “(Bible, Ephesians 2: 8-9)

It is likewise with God. He would like to listen to your life story. Sometimes he offers a direct solution, but sometimes you will also have to learn in some steps. If you walk around with problems that seem too big for a solution, then I want to invite you to speak to God, He will listen to you!

” I want your constant love, not your animal sacrifices. I would rather have my people know me than burn offerings to me. “(Bible, Hosea 6: 6)

Through this website, I want to help you learn more about your purpose of life and how you can lead a meaningful life.

Prayer

Prayer is talking to (and with) God. Allthough God will often not answer directly to you, you will experience His attention for your prayer.

Be sincere in your prayer to God (Hebrews 10:22). He will know what you are doing allready. As He is your Maker, talk to Him with the respect He deserves.

As God loves you, He will hear to your prayer. As His is more wise than you and because His plan will be bigger than you often can understand, the answer will not always be like you would expect.

Somtimes it will take a long time to understand the plan of God with your life. Maybe you even will suffer, being harmed by people, get in difficult situations or else. Do not get disappointed when you have prayed for something of somebody and the outcome is not like tou have expected. Sometimes your patience is put to the test and the outcome will be quite different as you would have expected.

Just like a good earthly father, God will look after His children and is looking for their best interest in the long term.

Church

Church

When you have become a Christian, it is advised to visit a local church. If there is no church, you can try to find other christians and start a church yourself.

The Church in general is the sum of all Christians over the world. In local terms, the Church is a place where Christians can meet and praise God.

When you are looking for a church to attend, you can visit several churches when available in your area. Between churches, there can be quite some differences, just as humans can differ.

When choosing a church it is most important to find out if the people in church really believe that the Bible is Gods word. If the people in church are telling you that the bible is not fully the Word of God, or that there are more rules than the Bible tells you or they worship idols, you better look out for another church.

Also by the behavior of the people that visit the church you can find out if this church is really a place where God is in the center. The Holy Spirit will help you to see the difference.

A good church will behave as “family of Christ”; Christains will help each other to praise God, grow in their belief, to share Gods message to others. Christians will show love to eachother and help eachother to become more and more like Jesus.

Baptism

Baptism

Baptism is the “outward sign” to show to other people that you are a true follower of Jesus.

The process of baptism is very simple. You begin by standing, sitting, or kneeling in some water. Another Christian then lowers you under the water and then brings you back up out of the water. You will be baptised in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit (read more: Matthew 28:18-19)

Very simply, baptism is an outward testimony of the inward change in a believer’s life. Your sins, your faults are “washed away”. It also refers to the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.

Christian baptism is an act of obedience to the Lord after salvation; although baptism is closely associated with salvation, it is not a requirement to be saved.

The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit

The Bible teaches us that God actually consists of 3 persons. This is also called the Trinity. For us as people it is difficult to understand that one being consisting of 3 persons. As we do not know similar beings, it is difficult to make a picture of this.

In the Bible, the three persons of God are described; God the Father, God the Son and the Holy Spirit. God the Father is described as the creator; God the Son is the mediator between man and God and the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God who can “live” in people.

If someone accepts Gods as his Maker and believes that Jesus Christ died for his mistakes, he will receive the Holy Spirit.

Since you can not see the Holy Spirit, you will have to “experience”. God will lead you in your life. The Holy Spirit does not take over your life, you will remain a creature with freedom of choice, but He will open your eyes to certain things. If it is given to you, then you will of the Holy Spirit empower or special gifts.

What does the Holy Spirit do?

  • He will help you into the Christian life and will empower you to follow Jesus; He will help you to transform, to become more and more like Jesus
  • He will learn you about God and guides you to truth (John 16:13-14)
  • He will teach you things that were unknowable to you before becoming a Christian
  • He prays for you (Romans 8:26-27)

Just as in a marriage or other relationships with people, you will expericence more from the Holy Spirit if you spent more time with God. Just as a married couple that will grow apart when both partners do not spend enough time together.

Through the Holy Spirit God can give you certain gifts that you need as a Christian. Those gifts can be found in the Bible (in 1 Corinthians 12 for example). Those gifts cen help you in situations.
You do not need to search for your gifts now. God will provide them to you when you need them.

Jesus Son of God

Jesus Son of God

Why is Jesus called “the Son of God”?

Jesus himself said that He was the Son of God: “Then they all said, ‘Are You then the Son of God?’ So He said to them, ‘You rightly say that I am.” (Luke 22:70). Jesus also often refers to God as His Father.

Also God is calling Jesus His Son “And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” (Mathew 3:17). It refers to the close connection that exists between God the Father and Jesus the Son (Luke 1:32)

The word “Son” in Bible history is also an indication for a relationship. In other parts of the Bible, Jesus is also called The Word of God. The Hebrew word “son” also can mean decendant or follower.

When you become a follower of Christ, you will recieve the Holy Spirit and become a child of God as is written in Romans 8:14; For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.

The Life of Jesus

The Life of Jesus

As you have read, God decided to send His only Son to earth, to live as human being.
Jesus (also called Christ which means King or Messiah) was born in Israel 2000 about years ago. You can read more in the book of Luke in the Bible.
For his first thirty years, Jesus lived a traditional Jewish life, working as a carpenter. During this time, all of Israel was under Caesar’s Roman dictatorship, including Bethlehem, where Jesus was born, and Nazareth, where he was raised.

In his thirties, Jesus began his public teaching and display of recorded miracles, yet still never travelled more than 200 miles from his birthplace. Over a three year period, Jesus’ reputation spread nation wide. The Roman governors and rulers of Israel’s provinces and the leaders of the Jewish people (the religious counsels) took note of him. Jesus’ key messages included:

  • God loves you and is with you
  • Love one another
  • The immense value of each and every person
  • Good news: kingdom of God has come to earth
  • Reality of judgment to heaven or to hell
  • God forgives those who ask for forgiveness

Jesus’ most controversial act was that he repeatedly claimed to be God, which was a direct violation of the Jewish law. Therefore the religious leaders asked the Roman government to execute him. In each of several official trials, the Romans found that he was not guilty of breaking any Roman law. Even the Jewish leaders recognized that other than Jesus’ claim to be God, Jesus followed the Jewish law perfectly.
Still the religious leaders, using the argument of political disfavor, persuaded Pilate, a Roman governor of the Southern province of Israel, to authorize an execution.

Jesus was brutally tortured and then hung by his hands, which were nailed to a horizontal wooden beam (cross). This method of execution restricted the airflow to his lungs, killing him in three hours. (Read about it in the Bible; Luke 22)

However, according to more than 500 witnesses, Jesus returned from the dead three days later, and over the next 40 days journeyed in both the southern and northern provinces of Israel. To many, this was conclusive proof that Jesus’ claims to be God were real. Then Jesus returned to Jerusalem, the city where he was recently executed, and according to witnesses, he left the earth alive by rising up into the sky. (Read about it in the Bible; Acts 1)

As a result of these miraculous events, the number of his followers increased dramatically. Only a few months later in that same city of Jerusalem one record states that some 3000 new followers were added in a single day. The religious leaders responded by trying to stomp out Jesus’ followers. Many of these people chose to die rather than deny their belief that Jesus was truly God.

Within 100 years, people throughout the Roman empire (Asia Minor, Europe) became followers of Jesus. In 325 AD, the following of Jesus, Christianity, became the official religion of the Roman Emperor Constantine. Within 500 years, even Greece’s temples of Greek gods were transformed into churches for followers of Jesus. Although some of Jesus’ messages and teachings were diluted or miscommunicated through the expansion of a religious institution, Jesus’ original words and life still speak loudly for themselves.

God’s Love

‘Yes, God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him would not be lost but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world. He did not send him to judge the world guilty, but to save the world through him. People who believe in God’s Son are not judged guilty. But people who do not believe are already judged, because they have not believed in God’s only Son. ‘ John 3:16-18

Creation

‘In the beginning, when God created the earth and sky, the earth was without life and not yet useful for anything. Deep waters covered the earth, and darkness covered the water. God’s Spirit was moving like a storm over the surface of the water. Then God said, “Let there be light!” And light began to shine. ‘ Genesis 1:1-3

The birth of Jesus Christ

‘While Joseph and Mary were in Bethlehem, the time came for her to have the baby. She gave birth to her first son. She wrapped him up well and laid him in a box where cattle are fed. She put him there because the guest room was full. That night, some shepherds were out in the fields near Bethlehem watching their sheep. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord was shining around them. The shepherds were very afraid. The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid. I have some very good news for you—news that will make everyone happy. Today your Savior was born in David’s town. He is the Messiah, the Lord. This is how you will know him: You will find a baby wrapped in pieces of cloth and lying in a feeding box.” Then a huge army of angels from heaven joined the first angel, and they were all praising God, saying, “Praise God in heaven, and on earth let there be peace to the people who please him.” ‘ Luke 2:6-14

The Lord is my Shepherd

‘The Lord is my shepherd. I will always have everything I need. He gives me green pastures to lie in. He leads me by calm pools of water. He restores my strength. He leads me on right paths to show that he is good. ‘ Psalms 23:1-3

Nothing can separate us from God

‘Yes, I am sure that nothing can separate us from God’s love—not death, life, angels, or ruling spirits. I am sure that nothing now, nothing in the future, no powers, nothing above us or nothing below us—nothing in the whole created world—will ever be able to separate us from the love God has shown us in Christ Jesus our Lord. Yes, I am sure that nothing can separate us from God’s love—not death, life, angels, or ruling spirits. I am sure that nothing now, nothing in the future, no powers, nothing above us or nothing below us—nothing in the whole created world—will ever be able to separate us from the love God has shown us in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ Romans 8:38-39

The most important law of God

‘He said, “Teacher, which command in the law is the most important?” Jesus answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and most important command. And the second command is like the first: ‘Love your neighbor the same as you love yourself.’ All of the law and the writings of the prophets take their meaning from these two commands.” ‘ Matthew 22:36-40

No one can serve both God and money

‘“You cannot serve two masters at the same time. You will hate one and love the other, or you will be loyal to one and not care about the other. You cannot serve God and Money at the same time. ‘ Matthew 6:24

Our God is a God who saves

‘He is our God, the God who saves us. My Lord GOD saves us from death. God will smash the heads of his enemies. He will punish those who fight against him. ‘ Psalms 68:20-21

Love

‘I may speak in different languages, whether human or even of angels. But if I don’t have love, I am only a noisy bell or a ringing cymbal. I may have the gift of prophecy, I may understand all secrets and know everything there is to know, and I may have faith so great that I can move mountains. But even with all this, if I don’t have love, I am nothing. I may give away everything I have to help others, and I may even give my body as an offering to be burned. But I gain nothing by doing all this if I don’t have love. Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous, it does not brag, and it is not proud. Love is not rude, it is not selfish, and it cannot be made angry easily. Love does not remember wrongs done against it. Love is never happy when others do wrong, but it is always happy with the truth. Love never gives up on people. It never stops trusting, never loses hope, and never quits. ‘ 1 Corinthians 13:1-7

Lord You know me

‘Lord, you have tested me, so you know all about me. You know when I sit down and when I get up. You know my thoughts from far away. You know where I go and where I lie down. You know everything I do. ‘ Psalms 139:1-3

Be happy, The Lord is near

‘Always be filled with joy in the Lord. I will say it again. Be filled with joy. Let everyone see that you are gentle and kind. The Lord is coming soon. Don’t worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks for what you have. And because you belong to Christ Jesus, God’s peace will stand guard over all your thoughts and feelings. His peace can do this far better than our human minds. ‘ Philippians 4:4-7

Our future: A new heaven and a new world

‘Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had disappeared. Now there was no sea. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. It was prepared like a bride dressed for her husband. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death, sadness, crying, or pain. All the old ways are gone.” ‘ Revelation 21:1-2,4

Trust in the Lord

‘Trust the Lord completely, and don’t depend on your own knowledge. With every step you take, think about what he wants, and he will help you go the right way. ‘ Proverbs 3:5-6

The Bible, The Book of God

The Bible is not just a book. Actually, it is not one book, but a library of 66 books. It contains history books, biographies, poetry, prophecy, letters, etc. The Bible is also a very old book. Some pieces were written some 3,500 years ago. This does not mean that the Bible is no longer of significance in our time. Anyone who reads the Bible will see that the words are still applicable to our lives.

It did not drop down from the sky

The Bible, as we know it in book form, wasn’t dropped on earth. Between the creation of the first and last book of the Bible are more than 1,000 years. It is a unit and collection of separate and very different writings. The Bible is a unique collection of writings. The word “Bible” is derived from the Greek biblia that means “books”. These books contain the sacred scriptures of Jews and Christians. The printed and bound book as we know it has two parts, 66 books, chapters and hundreds of thousands of verses. This book, which is both a unit and a collection of separate and very different writings, has a long history. Many of the events, religious laws and precepts, stories, songs, ideas, prophecies and spells was handed over from generation to generation orally.

Several writers

The books of the Bible were written in a period of over 1,000 years, roughly between 1000 BC and 100 N.C. at different times and places. Numerous writers have written the lyrics, transcribed and edited or supplemented by other texts or stories. This was done by hand, on papyrus or parchment. Not all texts have been preserved. Also, they are not all considered good enough to be recognized as a definitive collection (canon) of texts. Only after lengthy and complicated processes eventually determined which books had sufficient authority and authenticity to be a permanent part of the Holy Scriptures.

Why no clear and uniform manual?

Here we come back to the freedom of choice. If it would be a manual for life, little choice would be possible.

The Bible does contain important life lessons, and instructions (commandments) that humans must attend. Many of these isntruction are for the welfare of the man himself. The most important commandment is love. (In the bible: 1 Corinthians 13)

By having God’s message been told by people, the message comes to life. Through the Bible, we see people and entire nations struggling with their choices. Those who choose sincerely for God, will be discovering His plan. The people who choose against God have no future.

More

The Bible consists of two main parts, the Old and New Testament. The Old Testament is primarily about the people that God has chosen as His people. About the struggles that those people to remain faithful to God. The Old Testament is full of references to Jesus (see also More about Jesus).

The New Testament describes Jesus’ life on earth, showing many prophecies from the Old Testament to be fulfilled. (More about this topic). The New Testament tells the story through the eyes of the people who have lived in the era of Jesus and shortly thereafter. It contains many lessons of Jesus and the story about the crucifixion and resurrection.

When you will read the Bible from beginning to the end, you will learn to find a common thread. The thread is about the love of God for his creatures, but you will also find many stories about people who choose to turn their backs on God. God’s love conquers death for those who accept the redemptive work of his Son.
