How Meaning Came into My Life

How Meaning Came into My Life

My name is Sophia. I was born in Fairfield, New Jersey. I am a third born in a family of four kids, two girls and two boys. We were a very happy family who treated each other with a lot of love, consideration and care. My parents were the perfect couple and we were the perfect family. Though my parents struggled financially, they made sure we lacked nothing.  During weekends they would both take us out, to the park, swimming and sometimes watch us as we played games.

My dad was a truck driver who worked so hard and made sure we lacked nothing. We rarely saw him, he would come late at night and head to work early in the morning. He used to take a day off every Saturday and that is the only time we would spend time with him. My mum on the other hand was a house wife, she was always at home. She was the one who took us to school, helped us with homework, solve disputes between us, confide our secrets to and of course discipline us.

Untill life canged…

Things were perfect until my eldest sister was in her third year in high school. A bright girl who was always at the top of her class started to change. My mum was called by school administration several times due to her indiscipline. This went on for few months. One afternoon my mum received a call from her friend to go check her at a nearby local hospital. When she got there she received the news that her first born daughter was dead. The cause of the death was drug overdose. Nobody knew she had been using cocaine, this was a shock to everyone. We buried her and we moved on.

Four years after the death of my sister, my brother who was waiting to join college was caught by police with stolen items. He had joined wrong group of friends. He was jailed for six years in prison. This led to relationship between my dad and mum to be broken. My dad shifted all the blame on my mum. ”my job was to provide for the kids, and yours was to instill discipline. You have failed me and the kids. Look what they have turned out one is a thief and the other is dead”.  My dad used to tell her all the time. My dad could not take it anymore, she divorced my mum. This was a great loss for her, losing her husband and best friend when she needed him more. Even after divorce she still appeared strong and faced life with courage.

My mum’s responsibilities increased due to divorce. I could see her struggle to provide for us. My dad was no longer in the picture. He completely moved out of our lives. I worked so hard at school so that I could help my mum and my little brother. My hard work finally paid off, I received a letter to join Princeton University to study Architecture. My mum was so happy at least one of her kids will turn out to be great. She was so proud of me and always told my younger brother to follow my steps.

From hero to zero…

Losing my sister, brother and my dad affected me, I was so stresses up. I started drinking alcohol as a way distract myself. My mum being a strong woman of faith was able to move on, but for me I could not. I started to drink only on weekends to drinking from Sunday to Sunday. I joined Princeton University for the first year. After we went on a break, I could not go back to continue with my studies. My drinking habit had gotten worse. I had fallen from a hero to zero.

Whenever I came home late totally drunk, my mum would force me to pray with her. By the time she will be done praying, I would be snoring heavily asleep. The following day I would swear to her I will never drink again, but I would later come late in the night drunk. I would see tears in my mum’s eyes and this would pain me a lot. I wanted to change but I could not just stop because I was an addict. This went on for two years. Through it all, my mum never gave up on me.

A new turn in life…

My life changing moment came on one chilly morning. One Saturday night me and my friends we went into a bar and drunk until it was early Sunday morning. My friends left me, having no money on me I had to walk home. As I headed home my mum saw me as she was headed to church. She decided to first to take me home. As she was trying to get me in the car, one of her fellow church member pulled over and helped me get in the car. My mum took me home and headed to church.

Later that day my mum came with the church member who helped me get in the car. He introduced to me as John. He was an alumni of Princeton University. We talked for the rest of the evening. Then he asked me whether I would like to go for rehabilitation, that was what I was thirsting for. He assured me if successfully go for rehabilitation he will help me get readmitted back to the University. When he was gone my mum confessed to me how she had not slept all night because she was worried about me. She prayed all night for my safety. That was the only night I had failed to go back home.

I started my rehabilitation two weeks after I met John. My mum together with John encouraged me to continue with rehabilitation. They would share with me inspiring and motivating scriptures, then we would pray together.  I was not a religious person, I will be inspired for few hours then forget my purpose and went back to drinking.  I couldn’t control thirst of alcohol. Whenever my mum asked me whether I had gone back to drinking I would even swear I had never tasted alcohol since I started rehabilitation. This went on for the first two months.

Change came during the third month of my rehabilitation. One night I had a powerful dream. The dream was about overcoming all my problems and becoming a useful person in my community. I saw a writing on a piece of paper written Genesis 20 [a chapter in the Bible]. In the morning I told my mum about the dream. When I told her about Genesis 20 she took her bible and read we read the chapter. The chapter was about God’s promises to Abraham. My mum was quick to insinuate that was God trying to make covenant with me. I ignored her though I knew she might be right. She begged me we go to church but I declined.

A dream

Two weeks later my mum organized a prayer meeting at our house because I declined to go to church. I was so angry at my mum because she had not informed me. I slipped through the back door and left the house. That night I came home totally drunk. My lovely mum as always nursed me and prayed as I snored asleep. The dream kept on coming back three times. I was not telling my mum because she was making a big deal from it. The dream affected me so much, at first I never saw anything but when it started to come repeatedly was filled with fear.

It was on a Sunday morning when I dreamt the same dream. When I woke up it was around 10:30 AM. I was fed up with the dream and I would have done anything for the dream to go away. I remembered how my mum had told me, I should go back to church. I hurriedly left for church. I entered church and sat near the door. I sat there just in case I felt uncomfortable I left quietly. John saw me and he gave me a smile, I felt a little comfortable. It was sermon time, pastor was preaching. He was preaching about how God loves us, how he sent his only son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins, the sermon moved me so much.

Do you want to get saved?

At the end of the sermon pastor asked whether anyone want to get saved. Nobody was getting saved that day. He asked again and again. I could not take it anymore, I raised my hand up. He called me in front of the congregation. That is the moment my mum saw me, she couldn’t believe it. I saw tears of joy flowing on her cheeks. She was called to come witness me getting born again. The whole church stood up and started to pray for me.

I went home as a feeling like the happiest person ever. I was free and reenergized to take on the challenges in my life. Whatever I was lacking in my life I felt like I found it. I found purpose in my life through prayers. The urge and thirst to drink alcohol went away and was excited to see the next day unlike before.  From that day I never tasted alcohol again. I joined bible study where my faith was strengthened. Few months later I joined church choir where I started as a junior member to now rising to assistant choir leader.

A big change in life

I went successfully for rehabilitation for six months, I came out as a born again Christian ready to take the world. The following year I was readmitted to Princeton University. During my time at Princeton, I went for missionary work in Africa and India. I also visited more than ten rehabilitation centers as a guest speaker to encourage drug addicts.  I worked so hard to graduate at the top of my class with first class Honors in bachelor of Arts.

I learnt a lot about my experiences. My mum was able to lose her daughter, son and her husband and still managed to move because he believed in Jesus Christ. She used to get her courage through prayers and reading the bible. If I knew about Jesus Christ before, I too would have probably moved on. After I became an alcohol addict and I was taken to rehab, I still went back to drinking. But once I accepted Jesus Christ into my life and became born again, this is the time I was to stop drinking. I found peace and purpose in Jesus Christ.

Today am a happily married woman with three kids. I am a staunch Christian, and I am the assistant choir leader at my church. I am also involved in missionary work preaching about Jesus Christ to those who do not know Him yet. Recently I started my own company called Royal Builders. I still visit rehabilitation centers to encourage them as guest speaker. God changes people once you allow him into your life.

Five Cans of Beer and a Pack of Shag

Five Cans of Beer and a Pack of Shag

The other day I was waiting in line at the supermarket. An everyday scene for most of us. I always look at the people wainting in line and enjoy the diversity that is there. Every person is unique.

Sometimes something that you buy tells something about yourself. When I check out doner syrup, pancake mix and powdered sugar, I have heard from several cashiers: “Mmm …, do you like pancakes today?” And often they are right. “Yes, we’re going to eat pancakes tonight!”

Or customers who buy pizzas at 17.30. It is not difficult to guess what will be eaten later on that night!

Yet sometimes I see a lot of unhealthy purchases. A slightly older man caught my eye. Pale skin, dirty jeans and a sad look in his eyes. The only thing he bought were five cans of beer and a pack of tobacco shag. Cheap beer and as cheap as possible shag. I wondered what does his evening look like? An evening with a lot of beer supplemented with the smoking of self made cigarettes?

blankI felt kind of sorry for him. Because if he is going to fill his evening with drinking beer, there is also a lot of loneliness, a lot of hopelessness in his life. It is a way to forget unpleasant events in his life. Washed down with beer.

At this customer of the local supermarket I saw a shopping basket giving a clear expression of a signed life. But for others who look well cared for, have a well-stocked shopping cart and then buy three crates of beer at the same time, can have the same issues in life. The repression of your life questions, of failed relationships or a job that you have lost. But know that there is hope. Always, for everyone, poor and rich.

There is also hope for you!

What is The Value of human Life?

How can we determine the value of human life? There are several appoaches to value life. Most of them assume that a person has died. What was the value of that dead person when he or she could have lived, and what would be the (financial) value of the remaining part of his or her life? How can we compensate the loss of a loved one to the relatives? What amount of money is enough to replace the grief of the loss?

Economic value of human life

Despite all dilemmas, many calculations have been made worldwide about the financial value of a life. The amounts range from about $ 40,000 to $ 10,000,000 for a lifetime. These amounts are used by insurance companies, courts and the like.

Slavery and trafficking

In case of slavery or human trafficking, a life is valued on the market. How much labor can a slave do, how good is a girl to be a prostitute, how healthy is he or she, and what is the life expectancy? Can you comprehend how we as humans are able to use other people in exchange for our own wealth?

Other moral issues

What will you do when there is an emergency situation? What is the value of a life when there is danger? Some people will go until the end to save someone else’s life. Even at the expense of their own life. Yet this does not happen so often. How would you react in an emergency situation?

Usually, we are willing to put our lives at risk for a loved one. You will put your own life at risk for your children. But what about a complete stranger?

Does it matter to you whether the other person has done something wrong or maybe harmed a loved one? Would you be willing to do something in a dangerous situation for someone you don’t like at all?

The value of a life in an emergency situation

It is not only in emergency situations that people’s lives are valued. Every day we make decisions that can influence the life of others. Companies try to save costs and sometimes risk the lives of their employees. Was the saving of several thousands of dollars really worth it when an accident happens?
By driving recklessly, we risk the death of another in a traffic accident. Is saving 5 minutes of your time in traffic really worth that?

What is the value of your life when you are old? Can you be valuable to others by helping them? Or are you in need of help and feel worthless? Is that really true?

Quite some tough life questions. I hope all these would be much clearer to you when you take some time to  think about the value and meaning of your life…

Think one week about your life or do the Value Of Life test (above the picture)

Who is in control of my life?

Who is in control of my life?

Ever wonder who’s actually in control of your life? We live our lives, work and play. Our hard work often is appreciated by an income so we can provide ourselves a good meal or even more. The love we give to our loved ones will often be rewarded by love in return.

We plan what we want to do, decide on the course that our lives will go. We study hard at school and in university and then pursue our dreams. We make our choices of who to marry, where to live and which job we want to have.

I’m in control!?

We always seem to catch up with our plans. Yes, we believe we can have whatever we set our hearts on. We can live our dreams. We are in control. And that’s true. Hum!!! But who really is in control here!

Then after we have built our empires, lived our dreams and lives the way it seem good to us, we suddenly realize that life is more than all that we ever imagined it to be. Then life makes us to begin to wonder and ponder; who’s is in control here!

Losing control

Along the way, we sometimes loose our loved ones. We even sometimes loose the empire we have built. Most of the time, death, losing, sickness and challenges of life that we cannot even explain come at us. Often it ruins the life we have built. Then we begin to blame
providence, we wonder what is going on. We come to realize that we are not the actual person in control of life and even of our estates. Then we are prone to ask; who’s in control here anyway!

Sometimes, this realization comes too late. It comes at the expense of our loved ones. It even comes at the expense our lives. When the cheeks are down and the sun seem not be shinning bright over our lives.

Lost control of my life

Learn before it’s too late

But how come that man does not learn from the past? How is it that we don’t learn from history!

The greatest the world has ever produced, thought at one time that they were in control. Most of them realized too late that they were just instruments in the hands of an invisible force that they cannot explain but can never deny. Is that the force that’s actually in control here?

It seems like you and I are acting out a script, an already written script, even though we may never be aware of it. Wouldn’t it be better to just find out now who’s is actually in control here!

Is there someone behind the scene who’s running things and running our lives the way it was meant to be?

It’s time to find out…

I’ll be there for you!

I’ll be there for you!

Who’s your true friend?

I have recently been watching some old episodes of “Friends” on Netflix. The theme song became very well-known in the mid 90’s and is still one of the most popular tracks of music worldwide. The theme song “I’ll be there for you” by the Rembrandts got me thinking. Who is the “I” in the “I’ll be there for you?”

The world is a tough and challenging place and many people in countries from all walks of life are questioning what it going on around them. In the theme song from the popular comedy, the “I” was a friend, one of many or all of many friends who will be there for each other and you. However, the truth is not quite that simple, is A good friend always there for you?

Who can you trust with your questions?

My friend the psychiatristCan you trust others with the questions that worry you?  Who is to say the good friend you think you can rely on is not really giving you the right answers? Real friends should know us well but even I know that that is not always quite so. Social pressures impact us all and even those we think are there for us are impacted but in a different way. In truth, we need impartial advice, so where do we go?

Many will turn to a professional. Counselling and even psychics have become good business models in the strained world we live in. We all want a way out or to know the future. Many of us are so desperate that we turn to unknown people who claim they can help us or can at least help us untangle the mixed up messages we have inside. Some people are quite open with the fact they are “getting help” to cope and others keep it a secret.  Does any of this really mean these people, these experts, are there for you?

A happy pill

Happy pillsMore “happy pills” are being prescribed than ever before. There are countless energy drinks on the market that give us a buzz and we try to fix our problems physically with some drug or other. Doctors see growing numbers of sick patients with “stress related” problems than ever before. Doctors and Red Bull become the “I” in the “there for you” but again it is not the solution.

New Age thinking and Eastern Religions have some great ideas behind them and much of this has become commercialised to create another “I” in the I’ll be there for you. These come very close to being the perfect “I” and much of what is practiced is actually quite helpful.

Meditation and positive thinking are both massive when it comes to solving life’s problems but again there is always something missing, something within you something you can feel, that real friend that person, being with all the answers. We just can’t quite find it.

Instant fix

Instant fix for all problems

The trouble is that we all want an instant fix today. We don’t want to wait for answers we need to press a button to get a fix to our problems. The simple truth is that we have lost patience and lost faith in society and even ourselves. This is why the world is messed up, this is why many struggle, this is why many people do not have their “I’ in I’ll be there for you.

However there is an “I” we can all have, but we have to make our own “I” smaller to accept it. We have to submit and have faith in an unknown source. We submit to doctors, quacks and friends we are not entirely certain of, so why can we not submit to one more unknown?

There is one solution, it is not an instant fix but that is not to say an instant fix cannot happen. It does require an open mind but at the same time a mind that has to be closed off to much of the world. It does require trusting ourselves and it does provide the ultimate “I” who will always say “I’ll be the there for you and it is written down as a guarantee.

Where to find a friend you always can trust on?

The popping question is where to find a that friend, the “I” in the ultimate “I’ll be there for you”? There is one present friend in times of need. Do you want to find out more about this friend? Then start your 7-day discovery tour…

Losing or failing can be a good thing

Losing or failing can be a good thing

It is good to be a looser regularly. Winning is good and gives a very satisfying feeling. Nothing wrong with that offcourse. But when you would always be winning, you never would learn anything.

Probably you will remenber some of the best sport archievements in your life, the special moments that you have won a game, a lawasuit or maybe a lottery prize. I think you have to think harder to remember the moments that you have lost one of those.

Still the hard ones we remember. Losing a friend, a familymember or losing maybe your job.

Allthough it can be very painful to lose, there are also benefits in losing. Without losing, you will not learn in life. By discovering the things you would like to have, to archieve, you will learn the value of these by losing some of them in time.

It’s okay to lose, to lose often, and to lose time and again. It builds character, shows us how to keep on when the going gets tough, and teaches you that you are always stronger than you think you can ever be.

Losing precious possessions and relations will defenitly make you think about the value of life and the meaning of life. Somtimes it is hard to understand why we are loosing our valuables.

Finding your meaning in life will help you understand many of these things in time, at least for me it helped a lot. Still I have many questions in life, but through time I am dicovering the meaning of many of them… I hope you will discover your meaning in life too

What is the meaning of True Love?

What is the meaning of True Love?

In our lives we all desire love. But what is the true meaning of love? The word love has a lot of different meanings. I love coffee… I love my (girl)friend… I love this game…

How can we define true love? How does it feel? How does it look like?

True love is more than a feeling, a sensation, something you just say to please. True love is the sincere desire for the wellbeing of someone else. True love is patient and kind. It is not jealous, it does not brag, and it is not proud. True love is not rude or selfish, and it cannot be made angry easily. It does not remember wrongs done against it. True love is not happy when others do wrong, but it is always happy with the truth. True love never gives up on people. It never stops trusting, never loses hope, and never quits.

Did you ever truly love someone? Did someone truly love you? I hope you have had this experience in life. But maybe you do’nt feel loved at this moment or you do’nt have anyone to love. Maybe you have made some stupid decisions in you life that have caused that the love that was in you life has been broken.

Love can be very fragile, just as people can be very fragile. Sometimes we are just looking for our own best interest and we forget to look after the ones we love. It has happened to me to many times and I’m afraid I will make these mistakes in future again 🙁

Obstacles for true love

Often true love is hard to find. There are so many obstacles in life that withhold us from giving and recieving love. Unbelief, pain, experiences from the past, suspicion, possessions, dignity, fear…
